V Net Zero rebrands to Viking CCS

UK-based high-volume carbon capture and storage (CCS) solution formerly known as V Net Zero has changed its name to Viking CCS in a move that aims to ‘better reflect’ the strengths of the project’s capabilities.

The newly rebranded initiative is developing carbon dioxide (CO2) transportation and storage infrastructure in the Humber – the UK’s most industrialised and largest CO2-emitting region.

With its first capture scheduled for as early as 2027, Viking CCS is targeting a reduction of 10m tonnes of UK greenhouse gas emissions per annum by 2030.

CO2 captured from industrial processes will be stored 2,700m (9,000ft) below the seabed, beneath a ‘SuperSeal’ of between 180m (600ft) and 300m (1,000ft) of salt.

gasworld understands that there is over 300m tonnes of storage capacity in Viking’s depleted gas fields in the Southern North Sea.

Led by Harbour Energy, the project has ambitions to advance the UK’s reputation as a leader in CCS, in addition to meeting the Government’s Net Zero emissions targets.

“The project will also play a key role in solving the issue of stranded emissions from UK businesses and industrial clusters by developing an extended pipeline-based network which will link key emitters to Viking CCS’s transport and storage network,” said a company spokesperson.

Viking CCS is supported by initial investment of £3bn ($3.4bn) across the CCS value chain including capture and storage.
