The Port of Rotterdam’s Holland Hydrogen I project will soon be producing green hydrogen for industry and the transport sector – and today (Jan 11), plans took a huge step forward.

Having received inked a supply contract with project lead Shell, thyssenkruppUhdeChlrone Engineers has confirmed that it will install a 200MW electrolysis plant at the project site.

With the first construction work for the electrolysers likely to be in the springtime this year, the project partners are keen to get going, with hydrogen production likely to begin in 2024.

Transporting the hydrogen offsite will be a 40km pipeline which will run from the plant to Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam.

Dr. Christoph Noeres, Head of Green Hydrogen at thyssenkruppUhde Chlorine Engineers, said, “We are looking forward to support building a major hydrogen hub in central Europe and to contribute to Europe’s transition to green energy.

“With our large-scale standard module size, we will further strengthen Shell’s hydrogen strategy. Our partnership perfectly combines our engineering excellence with Shell’s competence of a large global energy player.”

Covering two hectares, the size of three football fields, the Holland Hydrogen I project marks a major moment for the Netherlands’ ever-developing hydrogen economy.
