Honda and Toyota have joined forces with the Government of Quebec, through Transition énergétique Quebec (TEQ), to invest in a hydrogen (H2) infrastructure project on the south shore of Montreal, Canada.
Due to be completed at the end of 2019, the expansion of H2 infrastructure in the province illustrates the companies’ commitment to expanding clean mobility options and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
Honda has continued to succeed in Canada by a steady cadence of technology investments that would move the company towards its global 2030 Vision and dream of creating a carbon free future.
“For Honda Canada, this investment in H2 infrastructure is about supporting progress in clean mobility options,” said Jean Marc Leclerc, Senior Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Honda Canada.
“In the short term, this investment will create an environment where we can continue to test our products and educate Canadians on the vast potential of H2-powered vehicles today knowing that mass adoption could take some time.”
Quebec’s first station
The building of Quebec’s first multi-fuel station, located in Quebec City, is well underway. In partnership with Harnois Energies and Hydrogenics, the station is being built with investment support from TEQ, as well as Natural Resources Canada and Toyota.
Toyota also supplied an additional, stand-alone H2 fueller for the station to help ensure uninterrupted service for its customers.
“To us, what’s most exciting is that the station will use an on-site electrolyser to turn Quebec’s abundant hydroelectricity into clean, sustainable H2 for fuel cell electric vehicles,” said Martin Gilbert, Director of Corporate Strategy and Innovation at Toyota Canada.
“As a global leader in the production of hydroelectricity, and with this type of technology in place, Quebec is poised to be a world leader in the production of H2.”
The new station will start fuelling vehicles in February and there are already plans to build another station in Montreal.
