Multiple hydrogen projects set to be developed in Oman

The Chairman of Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) has announced the signing of multiple green hydrogen projects to be developed across Oman.  

The agreements include six projects located near Duqm or Salalah ports, requiring an installed capacity of approximately 15GW of renewable energy, which are expected to produce over 700,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.  

The signings were agreed with bp Alternative Energy Investments for a project in Duqm and Dhofar, Green Energy Oman (GEO), Green Hydrogen and Chemicals SPC, Hyport Duqm consortium and SalalaH2 consortium.  

The Government of Oman and bp teamed up last year to explore the development of a multi-gigawatt renewable energy and green hydrogen hub in Oman.  

The total investment of the proposed projects is predicted to be $20bn, including shared infrastructure, and the green hydrogen produced will be further processed in local industries and into energy carriers for export.  

Abdulaziz Al Shidhani, Director General of Renewable Energy and Clean Hydrogen at the Oman Ministry, said, “Today’s milestone is another step to deliver on Oman’s green hydrogen strategy.” 

Salim Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, added, “While these agreements form the first testimony of our success towards decarbonisation, we look forward to signing more agreements once we receive the results of the first public auction round that is currently being conducted by Hydrom.”  

Oman aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and Hydrom has been established to drive green hydrogen development in the Sultanate.

Speaking at the Green Hydrogen Summit Oman, Al Aufi said Oman aims to be an ‘international hub’ for hydrogen production, renewable energy and ammonia for export into international markets.

GEO announced last year it is developing a 25GW solar and wind megaproject set to be coupled with electrolysis in order to generate industrial-scale quantities of green hydrogen and ammonia.

Once operational, it is expected to be capable of producing over 1.8 million tonnes of low-carbon green hydrogen per day and 10 million tonnes of green ammonia.
