Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Enersense Energy Namibia (EEN) to develop a green hydrogen and green ammonia project in Namibia.

Under the MoU, FFI will offer support, knowledge and guidance to the Daures Green Hydrogen Village project during its initial stage.

The project aims to revolutionise farming in Africa by producing agricultural produce using fertilisers made from green ammonia, and to supply green hydrogen and green ammonia to regional and international markets.

John Ngumi, FFI Africa Chairman, said, “Namibia has the chance to become a global powerhouse in the green energy value chain, with its abundant natural resources able to generate the renewable energy needed to produce large scale green hydrogen and ammonia for export and decarbonising local industry.”

Jerome Namaseb, Daures Green Hydrogen Village CEO, added, “The village intends to be Africa’s first Net Zero community and has the potential to produce in excess of 1GW worth of renewable energy and over 350,000 tonnes of ammonia.”

The projects first stage has received funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education in collaboration with the Namibian Government and currently consists of over 1MW renewable energy and a 500kW electrolyser.

Namibia and Germany established a formal hydrogen partnership in 2021, which sees the two countries pursue feasibility studies to implement joint hydrogen pilot project and to strengthen capacity building for trained professionals.

The project also intends to supply a vegetable greenhouse and various agricultural research projects in partnership with the University of Namibia and University of Stuttgart.
