Air Products, VPI ink agreement for 800MW hydrogen production facility

Air Products and VPI revealed on July 6, the companies have inked an agreement to jointly develop an 800MW low-carbon hydrogen production facility in Immingham, UK.

The Humber Hydrogen Hub (H3) is set to provide hydrogen to VPI Immingham’s existing combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power production in pursuit of decarbonisation, contributing to clean up one of the UK’s largest industrial clusters.

With hopes of saving over two-thirds of the Immingham site’s emissions, low-carbon hydrogen is set to serve as a substitute fuel for VPI’s existing third gas turbine power train, which will be combined with the deployment of post-combustion capture technology on turbines one and two.

H2 View understands the H3 project looks to capture up to two million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, contributing to the goals of the wider Humber industrial region to reach Net Zero by 2040.

Dr. Samir Serhan, Chief Operating Officer at Air Products, said, “We are excited to be working with VPI, a strong proponent for decarbonisation in the Humber region.

“Having a partner who is committed to decarbonising their existing power production operations through the use of low-carbon hydrogen provides the secure hydrogen offtake that makes this an excellent opportunity for us to support them and the UK Government’s broader sustainability targets.”

The companies have said applications for strand one funding for the H3 project as part of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund from UK Research and Innovation.

Air Products and VPI are hopeful that the project will contribute towards the UK Government’s ambitions of achieving 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Jonathan Briggs, Project Director at VPI, said, “When Humber Zero was first developed over two years ago, a low-carbon hydrogen solution for VPI’s third train was a critically important part of our mission to decarbonise Immingham.

“By partnering with Air Products on H3, we are harnessing the expertise of the world’s largest producer of hydrogen to ensure that we can make a substantial contribution to the decarbonisation of the Humber region.

“We are confident that, when appropriate government policy develops with respect to support of low-carbon hydrogen, H3 would materially contribute to meeting the UK’s Net Zero goals.”
