Linde expands supply agreement with Celanese

Linde has today (7th Feb) expanded its withstanding agreement with Celanese Corporation and will now begin supplying the chemical and special materials company with carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen.

Focused Celanese’s manufacturing facility in Clear Lake, Texas, the deal will see the delivered CO2 and hydrogen used as an alternative feedstock to produce methanol with lower carbon intensity.

Supplied CO2 will be captured from Linde’s nearby carbon monoxide production facility, with supply expected to begin in the first half of next year (2023).

Already, the industrial gas giant supplies Celanese with oxygen, nitrogen and carbon monoxide.

Jeff Barnhard, Vice-President of the South Region at Linde, said, “Linde’s products and technologies can assist customers in finding ways to produce essential chemicals with a lower carbon intensity.”

“By capturing the CO2 from our production facility and providing this to Celanese for use in their process, we are helping them to reduce their carbon footprint while also lowering Linde’s own carbon emissions.”

John Fotheringham, Senior Vice-President of Acetyls at Celanese, said, “Celanese is taking strategic steps aimed at reducing our operational impact globally, and the work we are doing with recycled CO2 at our Clear Lake facility is a significant step forward in our efforts to preserve the environment and be a responsible community partner.”

“By working with Linde, we expect to produce lower carbon intensity methanol with a high capital efficiency at a competitive cost.”
