Shell has opened its fifth LNG station for trucks in Germany as the oil major unveils plans for a network of 40 stations by the end of 2022.

Located in Kirchheim unter Teck on the important long-distance traffic connection from Munich via Stuttgart and Karlsruhe to France, the LNG station can refuel up to 150 LNG trucks a day and is the first in Baden-Württemberg.

“Globally, Shell’s ambition by 2050 is to have a net zero emissions business,” said Fabian Ziegler, CEO of Shell in Germany.

“As Shell in Germany, we can and want to make an active contribution and thus also help this country to meet its climate goals.”

“Providing the transport sector with climate-neutral LNG and the associated infrastructure, which also includes this filling station, is an important component and proof that we mean business when we talk about transformation.”

Shell is also planning to build a complete supply chain for CO2-neutral LNG based on liquid biomethane and a 100,000 tonnes gas liquefaction plant in the Rhineland refinery.

The next LNG stations in Shell’s construction programme are Weinsberg, Kassel and Stuhr near Bremen, which are due to start in autumn.

Further stations are planned for winter, weather permitting.
